The Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) is North Carolina's pre-licensure credential for counselors working toward full LCMHC licensure. To earn the LCMHCA credential, candidates must complete a master's degree in counseling or a related field from a CACREP-accredited program (or equivalent), pass the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE), and then accumulate 3,000 hours of supervised practice under an NC Board-approved clinical supervisor (LCMHCS) over a two-to-five-year window.
North Carolina's supervision rules are ratio-based rather than weekly-cadence-based: you need at least one hour of individual supervision for every 40 practice hours logged. At least 75% of all supervision hours must be individual (one supervisor to one supervisee). Supervisor qualifications

How many supervised hours does an LCMHCA need in North Carolina?
3,000 hours of supervised professional practice, completed over a minimum of 2 years and no more than 5 years. Within those 3,000 hours, you must accumulate at least 100 supervision hours, of which at least 75 must be individual (one-on-one with your supervisor).
What qualifies as an approved supervisor in NC?
Your supervisor must hold the LCMHCS (Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor) credential issued by the NC Board. No other license type — LCSW, LPC, LMFT, psychologist — satisfies the NC requirement. Your supervisor must also have a current supervision contract on file with the board for your supervision relationship.
What happens if the NC Board changes the supervision rules while I'm mid-licensure?
